LIFE STORIES

kitty hunter

27 Nov 1899 – 29 May 1942

Kitty Weaver Hunter was born in Charlotte, North Carolina on November 27, 1899 to Thomas Weaver, a laborer, and Betty Milling. One early census record from 1910 refers to a Killian Weaver in the Weaver household, which is believed to actually reference Kitty. This is the only instance that references Kitty’s possible name at birth. Kitty had two siblings, Batt Weaver (born 1900) and Lillian Weaver (born 1902). By 1910, Kitty and her sister Lillian lived with their parents at a rental property at 520 S Davidson Street in Brooklyn Village (Figure 1). They likely attended school at Myers Street School located at 515 South Myers Street, Charlotte, NC. Kitty would live her entire life within Charlotte, NC working in the domestic sector as a laundress in 1918, a maid at the Selwyn Hotel (Figure 2) in 1937, and a maid at a private home in 1940. In 1925, while continuing to work in the domestic field, Kitty Weaver and William Hunter (d. 1938) were married at Brooklyn Presbyterian Church by Reverend Furman Brodie. From at least 1918 to1929 Kitty lived at 504 E. 1st, in Charlotte, NC, but after their marriage, Kitty and her husband lived in a home at 518 E. Second, Charlotte NC. Over four years after the death of her husband, Kitty Weaver Hunter would pass away on May, 29 1942 with the cause of death listed as cerebral hemorrhage and arteriosclerosis. She is buried at Cedar Grove along with her father.
